Help Equip Students for a Youth Tech Bootcamp in Kenya

Hello, we are Alice and Justin from Vancouver, Canada.

We believe that encouragement and opportunity can change the direction of someone’s life, which is why we are travelling to Kenya in fall 2026 to share tech skills with local youth.

Growing up, we had access to education, technology, internet, and opportunities to explore our interests. Over time, we’ve come to realize how much those resources shape confidence, direction, and long-term opportunity.

We’ve also been shaped by people who invested in us including mentors, teachers, classmates, coworkers, friends, family, and experiences that helped us grow. That’s led us to reflect on a simple question: with the skills we’ve built so far, what would it look like to use them in a way that creates opportunity for someone else?

For Alice, volunteering in Kenya in 2024 with UBC Sauder LIFT’s entrepreneurship program showed her how practical, hands-on learning can support financial independence and open new pathways for people’s futures. It left a strong impression on her seeing program graduates take on new career directions or grow their businesses.

For Justin, experience in tech, including at Amazon, reinforced how powerful it is when people are given the right tools and mentorship to build. He believes that with the right environment and encouragement, people can discover what they’re capable of in ways they may not expect. It is from these experiences that he hopes to reduce barriers to entry and aim to make tech more accessible.

This thinking led us to create a hands-on tech bootcamp for youth in Kenya where participants will learn to code and build their own website.

The goal is to make technology more approachable and open up pathways into education, entrepreneurship, and future careers.

Together, we’ve designed this workshop from start to finish to be practical, accessible, and focused on real-world skills that can create lasting impact.

What We’re Doing
Together, we will be leading a 2-week bootcamp at a local community centre in partnership with the Human Needs Project non-profit organization.
The bootcamp will focus on coding fundamentals for web development, where participants will work toward building and presenting their own website using what they learn throughout the workshop.

Justin brings experience in software development, while Alice brings experience in marketing and branding, allowing us to create a well-rounded and hands-on learning experience for participants.

This initiative goes beyond simply volunteering our time. We wanted to take a lead role in designing, planning, and delivering the bootcamp from the ground up. We pitched the idea to our partner in Kenya and are now taking full ownership of bringing it to life for the youth, working closely with the Human Needs Project and local community leaders to develop the curriculum and coordinate logistics.

What Your Support Will Fund
Your support directly enables students to take part in this program.

  • Laptops - The community centre currently uses computers that are over 10 years old and have limitations in operating modern coding tools. Your support will help provide 10 new laptops so participants can learn with technology that is used in today’s tech industry.
  • Venue and operational costs in Kenya - Part of this fundraiser will help cover the rental of the workshop space (WiFi, electricity, washrooms, etc.) to run the program over the two-week period.
  • Learning materials and workshop resources - Funds will help cover stationary to make group activities, brainstorming sessions, and hands-on learning more engaging and effective.
  • Tech support - While we will be leading the workshops, we would also like to hire a local staff member to support participants as they learn and apply new concepts. This will help create a more interactive learning environment.
  • Meals for participants - We want students to be able to fully focus on learning in a comfortable environment. Providing lunch and snacks during the workshop will help students stay energized, engaged, and ready to participate throughout the day.
What Success Looks Like for this Bootcamp
  • Supporting 10 high school youth through this 2-week program
  • Providing participants with access to reliable laptops and modern software, ensuring relevancy and value
  • Each student builds and presents 1 website project (10 total projects completed)
  • Create and document a complete workshop curriculum that can be reused for future sessions
  • Train local facilitators to support and sustain future workshops in the community
  • Build a strong alumni network

Transparency of Funds Raised

None of the funds raised through this fundraiser will be used for our personal expenses. We will be covering our own flights, accommodation, and other costs related to this initiative.

100% of funds raised will go directly toward delivering this bootcamp and supporting students, with standard GoFundMe processing fees deducted.

All funds will be managed directly by us, and we will provide updates on how they are being used.

We appreciate all your support in helping us bring this vision to life and contribute towards this cause that you find meaningful!
