Atefeh is an Iranian PhD student at one of the leading universities in the United States whose life changed unexpectedly in her early 30s when she was diagnosed with highly invasive breast cancer and began chemotherapy treatment. She came to the United States to pursue her dream and build a better future, and she is now facing the biggest challenge of her life.

Living alone in the United States, far from her parents, family, and support system, Atefeh is fighting this battle entirely on her own. Receiving a cancer diagnosis while being thousands of miles away from her loved ones has been physically, emotionally, and financially overwhelming.

What makes this journey even more difficult is that the ongoing USCIS pause prevents her from traveling home to be with her family during this critical time without jeopardizing her ability to continue her studies and medical treatment in the United States.

Many essential expenses are not fully covered by her health insurance. Between medical tests, imaging, medications, surgery, chemotherapy, transportation to and from appointments, and everyday living costs during treatment, the financial burden is growing quickly.
