<div>Cody Gilbert was burned in a house fire in Baltimore on February 2, 2011. He turned 21 the next day in the burn unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was burned over 90% of his body and was given little chance of survival. Cody survived. The National Library of Medicine, part of the National Institute of Health (NIH), released an article on August 6, 2015 entitled “Cody” which graphically details his injuries, treatment and survival. <div>I met Cody in September 2025 while shopping with my wife Willa at the Ellicott City Walmart near Rt 29 and Rt 40. Cody stood at the red light near the left turn onto N. Ridge Rd. He was asking for money as he is seen doing in the three photos taken on Feb 14 - Valentine's Day. It was obvious he had been in a catastrophic fire, with scar tissue on every visible part of his face, scalp, legs, and arms. He walked with a limp. Because I shop regularly with Willa at Walmart, I saw Cody regularly at the red light. After the fifth or sixth time I asked him his name and later asked for his phone number. Our conversations were brief – only as long as the light stayed red. I learned he was homeless and stayed in the Pigtown neighborhood in Baltimore with an acquaintance. Two days before Christmas Eve I invited Cody to the 7pm Christmas Eve service at Glen Mar Church. He accepted, and he attended with Willa and me. He could not remember having attended a Christmas Eve service before. Cody is 36 years old.

<div>After 18 months in the hospital, which included 60 operations and transfusions of 160 units of blood, Cody was moved to a rehab facility where he spent two years. After he was discharged, he eventually became homeless and says he has been homeless for the last ten years.

<div>The photo is of me and Cody at Walmart on Friday February 6, 2026. Three men, self-dubbed “Team Cody”, who all met Cody while panhandling, and who also met in person for the first time on February 6, bought him some footwear and other clothes. Because of the wrapping on his left foot, he needed a size 12 for the left foot and size 9 for the right foot. Cody’s physical needs, such as stable housing, food, appropriate clothing, etc., are complicated by ongoing health problems, especially his legs and feet. Cody receives wound care for his legs and feet at Johns Hopkins twice a week. Cody has been advised that if the wounds do not heal within the next year, he may need to have one leg amputated.

<div>Cody was fortunate to meet a dentist from Catonsville while panhandling. The dentist has removed seven of Cody’s teeth pro bono in the last three months. Prior to that, Cody had not had dental care for over a decade. Cody will need all his upper teeth pulled and then dentures. Cody will be evaluated soon to help determine the best long-term course of action.

<div>Cody’s financial needs are prioritized as 1) a comprehensive dental plan, 2) rent for an apartment (one year), 3) clothing and food, 4) long-term mental health counseling, 5) money for transportation (Uber, Lyft) for appointments, and 6) job/vocational training. Cody also has spiritual needs that the third member of Team Cody – Nelson LeRoy – is trying to meet with his open invitation to go with him to services at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Ellicott City, an offer which Cody has accepted several times but has a hard time making a priority because of his other basic needs (housing, food, rest, and transportation). One of Cody’s long-term goals is to get a normal job and be self-sufficient, but his short-term needs include adequate money for stable housing, which will help him get physically better and on the road to self-sufficiency.

<div>If you read the NIH story about Cody, you will see a pre-fire picture of a handsome high school senior where he was an athlete and scholar. Without knowing precisely what Cody’s financial needs are, we have set a modest goal which will pay for whatever dental care plan is selected, allow him to move to a permanent housing situation for a year, and keep him off the corner. Finally, if you live in Maryland, and would like to meet Cody, he is an inspirational and engaging young man with a surprisingly positive attitude – he is also a man with a grateful heart. Apartment fire lost everything!

On Saturday Nov 4, our community suffered an unimaginable tragedy and loss. Due to injuries sustained in an accident Heathers family and our community lost 4 amazing people. <div>Hi, my name is Karla and I am a good friend of Kelly Sherman’s. Her oldest son, Hunter James Sherman - 20 years old, tragically passed away from a fatal motorcycle accident on Saturday, August 26th. He was living in Utah, but the majority of his family is in northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. The family is, understandably, devastated by this loss. And truly is unable to afford all the costs a death incurs in addition to the costs of moving a body across the country.

<div>Hunter James Sherman, 20, formerly of Sykesville, MD passed away tragically, in Sandy, UT due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

<div>He was born on January 2, 2003, at Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Towson, MD to Kelly Jean Harlow Sherman and Daniel James Sherman of Sykesville.
</div>
<div>Hunter was currently working as a cashier at the convenience store, 7-Eleven in Sandy, UT. He was a graduate of Century High School, Class of 2021, where he played football, wrestled and was on the cheer team. He then entered the Navy and due to health reasons was honorably discharged. Hunter was an athlete and also enjoyed online gaming. He played football from the age of 7 until high school with the Winfield Cavaliers. He also played basketball for a few years with the Winfield Cavaliers. Hunter had an extreme love for his siblings and family. He was a big advocate for social justice and did anything he could to dissuade injustice in the world. As a young teenager, he enjoyed helping with programs at his church, Damascus Road Community Church. While he never had the chance to be a father, it was clear he would have made a great one. He also had a love for animals, especially German Shepherds. Another love of Hunter's was riding his motorcycle which tragically ended his life.

<div>Surviving in addition to his parents are sisters and brothers-in-law Kiara Kelly Sherman and Chris Fifield and their young son of Stillwater, OK and SheriDan Rose Sherman and Jacob Gingrich of Palmyra, PA; brother JayDan Leigh Daniel Sherman of Sykesville and nephew Ezekiel Tanner Fifield. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

<div>The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7pm on Saturday, September 2, 2023, and from 2 to 3pm on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at Haight Funeral Home &amp; Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD. A funeral service will follow the Sunday visitation at 3pm at the funeral home. Following this will be a fellowship and celebration of Hunter James at Damascus Road Community Church, 12826 Old National Pike, Mt. Airy, MD 21771 at 5PM. Interment will be private.

I had spent my career researching disinformation and would be using my expertise to make the United States safer and American democracy more robust. At the Department of Homeland Security, I would lead a new internal body to help address the challenges of disinformation: the Disinformation Governance Board. My job was to make sure different entities within DHS were coordinated, to bring the latest research to bear in the Department, and to help the Department set up policies to ensure its existing counter-disinformation work was grounded in American values: privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties. That’s all the Board was. It had neither the ability nor authority to act on its own.

<div>In late April, my position was announced, and within hours, baseless claims that the Board was a nationwide, Orwellian “Ministry of Truth” and I was “President Biden’s chief censor” were trending on social media, even though the Board had nothing to do with arbitrating or restricting speech. The next day, Fox News launched its overly personalized, false, and incendiary coverage of me, mainstreaming online conspiracy theories to tens of millions of Americans. The network made over 500 scaremongering statements about my role, my views, and my personal life over the next nine months—an entirely disproportionate disinformation and smear campaign against a person who simply took a job to serve her country within her area of expertise.
</div>

</div>
<div>The facts did not matter to them or anyone else using me as a punching bag. When it targeted me, Fox News wasn’t providing news, government accountability, or merely biased, selective coverage; most mentions of me involved outright lies. The network’s malicious and reckless false statements about me were easily disproven by a few minutes of research. Fox twisted a handful of tweets, manufactured positions on topics I'd never weighed in on, and amplified absurd claims from anonymous trolls' manipulated videos of me. I became the young, female, easy-to-attack public face of what Fox pundits were recklessly spinning as “men with guns [telling] you to shut up.” Congressional Republicans and the right-wing media characterized me as an unhinged, partisan, unserious, dangerous fascist, despite my track record of measured, bipartisan work, including testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2018 at the GOP chair’s invitation. I received an onslaught of violent online abuse during the final weeks of my pregnancy. My family was threatened; I was pregnant.
</div>

<div>Faced with this onslaught, I decided to resign my position . The Board was eventually scrapped, caving to the GOP disinformation campaign about it. Yet, several years after my position was announced, the hate campaign launched by Fox News against me continues. In addition to the deferral of my dream of serving my country, I’ve lost something irreplaceable: peace with my son during his first years in the world.

<div>To put it simply: my life has been irrevocably altered because Fox News repeatedly force-fed lies about me to tens of millions of their viewers. Tens of thousands have harassed me online. Hundreds have violently threatened me.

<div>I am far from the only American to experience this type of Fox-led hate campaign, and it must stop.
</div>

</div>
<div>That is why I sought justice—not just for me, but for others who have been or will be in my position, and for American democracy.

<div>I pursued a suit to hold Fox News to account for their utter lack of regard for the truth and the consequences of their lies. This was a costly and difficult endeavor, but the funds I raised here made it possible. Unfortunately, I lost the lawsuit. You can read my reflections on that in the updates section.

I’ve been a teacher in Baltimore county child care centers for 10 years, this is my first year assisting special needs children in Baltimore County Public Schools . However, during my pregnancy I was diagnosed with a fainting disorder that made every day life impossible to maintain. My husband works full-time and overtime as a mechanic but we just haven’t been able to keep up with rent. Where we live doesn’t allow us to miss any payments and try to catch up later. We are served with an eviction notice immediately upon missing a rent payment and I’m unable to just move when that happens. We’ve maintained our residence for two years now with no problems but because of my health condition and my inability to work it has put us into a financial hole. Hello Everyone, On April 24th we got the diagnosis every family fears. Our 23-year-old daughter was diagnosed with stage three triple-negative breast cancer. We were devastated, but that devastation quickly turned to war mode. Lindsey has always been a fighter and a risk-taker. As her parents, we are now too. We are in the fight for her life. On the day she was supposed to be walking across the stage to receive her BFA she was having surgery to insert the port she needs for her chemotherapy. Her first full-time professional job evaporated with the COVID Virus and her diagnosis of cancer. Her future has been suspended for this battle. The good news is despite having stage three cancer she has a very hopeful prognosis. She has excellent medical care at an institution that specializes in her type of breast cancer. She is young, but that is going to play to her benefit because it is allowing them to go all out in their treatment of this cancer. This cancer is very aggressive, but so is their treatment. She is undergoing chemotherapy now for several months. Then she will have a mastectomy and then radiation. Her spirits are good and she is full of fight, as are we. What we are not though is wealthy. She is now unemployed for the foreseeable future and we are a one-income family with me working on the side, but really, Bert is the only real breadwinner. He is a hardworking man and we have been able to have a comfortable life this way. Now, I have moved here to Cincinnati where she is getting her treatment to help take care of her. She needs a lot of care and a clean, homelike setting to heal in. We have found such a place thanks to our angels here in Cincinnati but supporting two households is almost impossible right now. My only job is Lindsey, only Lindsey. We have been applying for any and all assistance we can get to help with medical, housing, and living expenses. With the virus, everything is moving at a snail's pace, but even without the virus getting help always takes longer than the time you have to get it. We have always worked hard and tried to help others whenever we can. We know what it is like to struggle, but this is a struggle we were never prepared for. So, here we are setting up a Go Fund Me account asking for help. We never in our wildest dreams thought we would ever be here right now. Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would be watching our 23-year-old daughter fight for her life instead of soaring into her new life. We have been blessed by so many friends and family jumping to our aid but given the thousands of dollars in medical expenses she will face alone we need to cast a wider net of help. Lindsey Cohen Cancer Slayer

<p>Nashwan is a young guy, 20 years old with 2 sisters, 18 and 13. Both parents dying from coronavirus. Left home with both parents in ICU. Mom was denied care at Troy Beaumont and later that night went in an ambulance to St. John Ascension hospital. She is on a ventilator, has kidney failure, pneumonia, she’s septic and has internal bleeding just to name some of her major problems. Nash’s Dad in ICU, they’re doing proning, they called today for Nash to come see him even though it’s forbidden because of the virus.

<p>3 kids home, no income, no idea what parents do about family bills, mail, etc. Both Nash and 1 of his     Sisters recovered themselves alone at home. No      Income coming in. No immediate family here, no    Family here to help- grandparents overseas. 
</p>

<p>This family came as refugees 8 years ago with an   American  dream, only to get caught up in this <br />deadly virus. They need help to keep things afloat before these 3 kids are left with no home, no money, and to suffer. The parents outlook is grim, only    hoping that 1 can survive. Both hospitals say very <br />low chance they will make it.

Nash & sisters lose both parents to Covid-19

After the tragic events that took place June 4th, at 8pm at Buffalo City Hall- an elderly gentleman was abused by Buffalo Police Department Riot officers, leading to him being severely injured. We have started this fund to help pay for his medical bills and any legal fees that may occur for this innocent man who is a well known for his work with local civil rights activism with PUSH Buffalo, and the WNY Peace Center.

Please note that we have been in direct contact with Martin's legal representative and will be working very closely with her to ensure he will be in receiptof these funds. All funds raised will go directly to the victim.

Please Help AAHA Help Puppy Moose!

Due to death threats, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford (who uses “Dr. Blasey” professionally)  and her family have had to leave their residence and arrange for private security. Let’s create a fund to cover her security expenses, to do just a bit to make it easier for women in her position to come forward despite great risks. If we raise more than Dr. Blasey needs,  extra funds will go to women’s organizations and/or into an account to cover similar costs incurred in comparable situations.<br /><br />I do not know Dr. Blasey personally but will contact her via her former high school, Holton Arms, to inform her of this fundraising appeal and to make arrangements to transfer funds to Dr.  Blasey.<br /><br />I am a professor of law at Georgetown University who has raised money formally and informally for other causes over the years. My reason for starting this fundraiser is to make concrete the power of collective action in providing security, and therefore support, for Dr. Blasey’s willingness to contribute to a thorough, fair vetting of a nominee for Supreme Court Justice.
